Common Types of Seals Used in Machinery
The modern life runs on machines. Many of these machines rely on seals to keep unwanted items out of the machine or to prevent objects from rubbing against each other. Here are a few of the most common types of seals used in machinery.
Hydraulic Seals
High pressure hydraulic shaft seals can handle the rigors and pressure of hydraulic applications. Both reciprocating and rotary motions use these types of seals. They keep the hydraulic fluid from escaping. This fluid is essential for the device or machine to properly function. Foreign materials are unable to penetrate the seal and negatively affect the machine’s performance.
LC Profile
These seals can handle rapid pressure fluctuations common in certain types of industrial engineering. Leaks are reduced with an LC profile seal when compared to traditional two-piece seals. The seal comes in one piece and is used for a variety of lubricants.
Pneumatic Seals
Pneumatic machines use high speeds in a variety of applications. The machines generally use either reciprocating or rotary motions and need a seal that can withstand the workload. Air actuates the valves and cylinders in pneumatic devices requiring a seal that can handle the pressure and speed.
Automotive Seals
The automotive industry uses a variety of seals to keep a vehicle running smoothly. The engine itself uses a variety of seal types optimized for automotive performance. The suspension system must handle the changing conditions of the roadway while supporting the weight of the vehicle with minimal movements. The bearings, wheel ends, driveline, steering and body all have separate seals for a variety of purposes.
Seal Choice
Each machine relies on specific seals to function properly. Without the right seal, the machine cannot operate at peak performance and may even break down. Replacing seals as they breakdown can eliminate some of the wear and tear on the machine itself. These are but a few of the options available for use in a variety of applications.
