What is Land plane, and Is it Good Then Box Blade?

A land plane is excellent equipment to have in your machine shed for maintaining gravel roads and driveways, smoothing a horse arena, leveling a garden, and a variety of other tasks. So, here are some fundamentals for working with one.

Two cutting blades are mounted horizontally and at a parallel diagonal angle between two end plates coupled to a steel frame in the Frontier Land Planes (US CA). The blades’ cutting edges can skim along the ground’s surface or cut into it at a shallow depth. Some variants come with both a drawbar and 3-point hitch, giving you more options when it comes to the equipment you use to pull it. The Land plane should be set up such that both blades hit the ground simultaneously when smoothing a surface that requires care, such as a gravel driveway. Gravel and soil are lifted and flow over the tops of the blades, out the back, as the Landplane begins to work. As more material is lifted, it is held between the two endplates and builds up. When the Landplane is fully loaded, material flows uniformly and freely throughout its working breadth, leaving a smooth, flat surface in its wake.

Let’s shorten the top link on the 3-point hitch to allow the front blade to make a deeper angle cut than the rear blade for applications where you want a slightly more aggressive cut. You can also prolong the top link to make the back blade work harder.

Working slowly is the key to successfully using a land plane. After some practice, you’ll be able to determine the best speed for your tractor and project. But, in general, take it carefully and give the Landplane a chance to accomplish what it was designed to do.

What is a Box Blade, exactly?

A tractor attachment called a box blade is formed like a three-sided metal box. It is a versatile instrument used for leveling, grading, backfilling, and spreading gravel or soil. Front and rear scraping blades are located on the bottom of the rear panel, and the box blade is slotted with scarifiers that dig into the ground and break up the earth.

Box blades help reshape and slope your driveway as well as moving material. You can also use it for carrying a massive volume of soil backward or forwards by pushing or tugging it.

Land Plane vs. Box Blade

The material you’re working with, and the task at hand will determine whether you use a box blade or a land plane. If you’re smoothing out a gravel road, the Landplane is the way to go. However, use the box blade if you need to move soil or another material from one location to another. It can carry more material than the Landplane, resulting in fewer journeys.

While land planes are great for smoothing out your driveway, the versatility of a box blade is hard to top when you need a comprehensive tool to assist you in managing your property.
