How To Organize Your Garage For Good
When things don’t fit in the house, they tend to end up in the garage, making it a clutter magnet. Before things get any scarier out there, get the family together and plan a few days to put the garage in order. Many hands make light work and you’ll feel so relieved when you can walk into a clean and clutter-free garage.
Do a Deep Clean
Before you can tackle organizing the stuff in your garage, you have to take time to clean. Begin by sorting through items, discarding trash and donating things you no longer need. If you have enough items left that you’d like to sell, consider hosting a yard sale to clear it all out. Once everything is out of the garage, sweep or vacuum the floors. For a new-looking floor that’s easy to clean and disguises imperfections, consider laying down an epoxy floor coating.
Keep Tools in One Area
If tools are stored all over the garage, it can be frustrating to find what you’re looking for. A heavy duty tool box, complete with tool box wheels, can be the perfect storage solution. With a multitude of drawers, tool boxes can hold everything from boxes of hardware to cordless drills. If you know you love home projects or woodworking, a built-in workbench with drawers is another solution.
Use Storage Racks
Heavy-duty storage racks are built to hold substantial loads. In a garage, they can be used to store boxes of out-of-season clothing, holiday decorations and lawn tools. Keep similar items together for easy access and to eliminate searching. Open shelving is easier to access than cabinets and can prevent critters from finding hiding places. If you store multiple bikes in the garage, you may also want a mini bike rack. It will keep bikes from falling over and damaging walls or your car.
Organize on Walls
There are many garage organization hooks available to hang garden tools, ladders, wood planks and more. If you prefer to see your tools instead of storing them in a tool box, hang a piece of peg board on the wall and purchase a variety of hooks to hold them.
Cleaning and organizing your garage may feel like an impossible task, but taking it one step at a time, and having a few helpers, can make it happen. Plan your days ahead of time based on clear weather and your schedule, then prepare a celebration for when you finish this gigantic task.
