Site Selection for a Nursery
Are you considering starting a nursery for popular and scarce plant species? It is a good thing. One of the things that many people bother about a nursery is picking a location that would be favorable for their business. Where is the best place? Where do I source my wholesale nursery pots and other resources from?
Accessibility: The number one factor of any location for a business is accessibility. How easily can your prospective clients find where you are? How easy is it to navigate their way to your place from a prominent landmark in the area? If you have a good area location, you can go on.
Soil type: Wherever you intend to have a nursery, you should have a good soil type. The recommended soil type is loam. Loamy soil has the physical, structural, and nutritional attributes most plants need. Hence, if you would be having your nursery directly placed on the ground, the location should have loamy soil. However, you can source your loam elsewhere and plant your crops in wholesale nursery containers. However, it is always easier when your location has the soil type.
Irrigation source: Nursery beds would need constant irrigation. So, think of a location that has easy access to water. You can rely on nature’s supply or some other source of artificial irrigation, such as public water or a private water source. Consider the cost of each option of where you can get water from.
Availability of resources: Consider a location that is close or central to where you would be getting most of your resources, to save you running costs. A nursery should be proximal to where you would source fertilizers, seeds, insecticides, farm tools, hormones, nursery containers, etc. Yes, it is easy to order things online these days, but you should still consider transportation costs.
Protection: You should be protective of your nursery. So, look around; what protection does the area offer? Is there protection from natural predators and flood? Protection from trespassers? The place should not be prone to flood or pest infestation. So, ask questions and investigate before you settle down in a prospective place.
